I hate New Year’s Resolutions. I can honestly say I have never kept any of them.


Maybe they were too ambitious? “I’m going to lose 50 lbs. by March, and organize and clean sweep my entire home and property in a few weekends!”

Or maybe they were too unrealistic? “I’m going to win the lottery, and we are all going to Fiji!”

Maybe I just never took any of them serious? (likely)

It’s hard to say, but whatever the reason, it just never clicked with me.

Every year when January rolls around I see all of the “cool kids” ie. other business owners, business coaches, Instagram influencers, etc. creating vision boards, and setting New Year’s resolutions, I think “maybe this is the year”. Or “what is it that they are doing that I’m not? Why do they get it?”.

Turns out, after reaching out to a few colleagues, I asked what the magic formula was. It wasn’t as hard as I was making it. What I needed to come up with for myself was actually an “intention” instead of a “resolution”. Kind of like a theme. One word to remember my intention for the year. Way easier!

But then the wheels started cranking in my brain and I began to think about how I could translate that information to Summit?

What could Summit’s “intention” for 2019 be?

Now we have a Mission Statement (click the link to read) on our website and we do abide by that because it truly is who we all are and how we operate, and I wasn’t looking to replace that. But we are always looking for ways to improve, and thus we needed an intention.

In talking with Dave about his vision and goals for Summit for the upcoming season, the path he wants to see the company take, the one word that kept popping into my head during those discussions was “curate.” He brought up his plan to attract the right projects and develop good working relationships with those clients, all while using the best materials from our vendors. We will use our 20 years of experience to “curate” custom built hardscapes and outdoor living spaces for our clients. This became our “intention” for 2019.

Now I know this intention setting / resolution business is not a new concept to business owners. January is typically a time for us to regroup, take a breath for a minute and tweak anything that needs attention. But sometimes it takes getting outside of the box and looking at things in a different way to set the course. We are not changing that course, we will just be doing it better in the most efficient way possible.

Now if you were curious as to what my personal intention was, let’s just say my unrealistic expectations for myself and my abs are going to “evolve” in 2019!
